Find the best ReString string and setup for your game with our String Finder.
We're back for another mailbag, where we answer real questions from customers.
This month, we will cover a heavy spin player setup, a USTA 4.0 player setup, the differences between Sync full bed and Zero x Sync hybrid, ReString options for elbow pain, comparable setups to ReString Slap, and recommended tension range for ReString Slap.
Question 1 - Heavy Spin Player Setup
Hey, so I decided to try a Sync full bed. But after I have played some time with it, I noticed that sometimes my ball doesn't dip in the court, like it used to. Most of my balls would fly out.
I think when I used to play with RPM blast, those shots that I'm missing right now would dip in. I play with heavy spin and I was looking for some control in my game recently, and since everyone was using round strings such as Yonex PTP, I decided to give Sync a try.
I'm a previous RPM Blast user and I really liked the spin and the control of it, but I don't like how fast the tension drops. I was wondering, would switching to Zero mains and Sync crosses give a similar feel to that of RPM Blast?
I want heavy spin without sacrificing any control.
ReString Response
It sounds like you previously benefited from a shaped string that gave you that extra bite on the ball.
Sync is an excellent choice for control and feel, but due to its smooth round shape, you won’t experience the same kind of ball bite as you would with a shaped string.
Your suggestion to try Zero in the mains and Sync in the crosses is an excellent adjustment.
The Zero in the mains will provide more spin from the ball bite and better access to power for penetrating shots. The slick Sync crosses will offer a lot of control, so overall, this is a hybrid I highly recommend.
While we can’t share too much just yet, we will be releasing a new string in mid-March that should suit your game very well!
Question 2 - USTA 4.0 Player Setup
I'm a 6'3" male singles player that also plays doubles. USTA 4.0 Player. Technically correct strokes. Heavy forehand, one handed backhand, heavy kick serve, aggressive base-liner that ghost into the net. I play with Yonex Ezone 98 tour.
I've experimented with strings. I had settled on Solinco 17G Hyper-G starting at 51 lbs until I tried Luxilon Alu Power Spin 127 strung at 49 lbs.
I loved the feel, power, and pocketing but they lasted no time.
Which string would you recommend for me or hybrid?
ReString Response
It sounds like you enjoyed the shaped poly of Hyper G but really loved the pocketing and feel you got from ALU Power. Given your playing style, I can definitely recommend two options.
Option 1: A full bed of Sync 17G
This plays quite similarly to ALU Power but provides extra access to spin thanks to our Signature Snapback coating. You'll get excellent feel and pocketing with this setup. I'd suggest trying this at 49 lbs.
Option 2: A hybrid of Zero in the mains and Sync in the crosses
Zero is our flagship shaped string that delivers a ton of power, responsiveness, and bite. It is quite similar to Hyper-G, and we’ve had many players successfully switch over to Zero.
Running Zero in the mains at 50 lbs and Sync in the crosses at 48 lbs will give you the best of both worlds. I think you’ll really love it!
Question 3 - Sync Full Bed Compared to Zero and Sync Hybrid
Hello, I really like ReString Sync 1.30 at 54 lbs in a full bed on my HEAD Speed MP.
I was wondering how different the ReString Zero and Sync hybrid would be compared to Sync on my racket.
ReString Response
It's great to hear you're enjoying Sync 1.30 in your Head Speed. It definitely offers excellent control and feel, while still providing great access to spin thanks to the Signature Snapback coating.
Regarding your great question, Zero is our flagship string for power and spin. It's highly responsive and provides even more spin than Sync due to its shaped profile.
If you decide to try this hybrid, I recommend putting Zero in the mains and Sync in the crosses.
This setup offers the "best of both worlds." You will maintain the feel and control you love from Sync, but with the added pop, power, and spin from Zero.
It’s a great choice if you feel like you need a bit more help from the stringbed to put the ball away with pace or pull your opponent off the court.
Followup Question
What tension for ReString Zero 1.28 mains and ReString Sync 1.30 crosses should I do if I normally use Sync 1.30 at 54 lbs.
I have heard of Zero feeling stiffer so I am not sure on what's a good starting point and I prefer 16 gauges.
Followup Response
Good question. Since you normally use Sync 1.30 at 54 lbs, and Zero can feel a bit firmer in comparison, it’s usually best to drop the tension slightly when adding it in the mains.
A good starting point would be:
Zero 1.28 mains at 52 lbs
Sync 1.30 crosses at 53 lbs
This keeps the overall feel close to your usual setup while adding the extra spin and bite from Zero without making the stringbed feel too stiff.
If you prefer a slightly softer feel, you could also try 52/52.
Question 4 - ReString Options for Elbow Pain
I'm a big fan of the ReString story and your products. I've played with Zero, Sync, and Vivo, all as some sort of a hybrid setup (I've had medial elbow pain for decades.)
I've also purchased Slap but have yet to try it. I'm wondering which of your strings is the softest?
I haven't felt a big difference in terms of comfort between the three that I've played with - they all seem to be relatively close in terms of softness / comfort.
ReString Response
Thanks for the kind message and for being a fan of the brand! It means the world to us.
I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with arm issues. I certainly know what that’s like after having tennis elbow on and off for years.
Slap plays closest to Zero as it is derived from the same base formula, but there are noticeable differences in control and softness, with Slap being softer and more control-oriented than Zero.
If you like Zero but want something a little more forgiving, Slap is a great choice.
That said, the softest of our strings is Sync. It is still a co-polyester, so you won’t get the same plushness as you would from a multifilament or natural gut, but as far as polyesters go, it is relatively forgiving.
For your situation, a Slap and Sync hybrid would be a great setup, or even a full bed of Sync to optimize for softness. If arm pain is a major concern, a hybrid setup I’ve been loving lately is Sync paired with a durable multifilament or natural gut.
Question 5 - ReString Slap and Comparable Setups
Hello, I have a question about Slap 16G.
How does it compare to Solinco Confidential 16g in terms of spin, power, durability, and control? And how does it compare to Zero 16g mains and Sync 16g crosses hybrid?
ReString Response
Great questions! Slap 16G is going to offer more power and spin potential than Confidential 16G.
It's based off Zero which is a powerful string and it has our Signature Snapback coating so if you are looking for more pop and spin potential vs Confidential you'll really enjoy Slap.
Both are shaped strings so in terms of launch angle, you should find them to be comparable.
Another thing you will notice is that Slap will play a touch softer than Confidential - if you are looking for something a little more forgiving, Slap is a better choice.
The hybrid gives you the best of both worlds by combining two contrasting strings - you get the power and spin from Zero and the control and feel from Sync.
If you go Slap in a full bed, you will get an experience that is closer to Zero since Slap shares the same base formula. If you are a Zero user but you want to dial the power back a little bit and benefit from more control, Slap is a great natural choice.
Given that Slap is also shaped, you would be using a shaped string in both the mains and cross which will give you a more uniform experience.
To be honest, it will just come down to preference. A Zero and Sync hybrid is great if you are someone who generally enjoys the feeling of a hybrid (mixing two different things).
If you prefer to keep it simple and 'Zero like' with added control and forgiveness, Slap in a full bed is the logical choice!
Question 6 - Tension Range for ReString Slap
Hi, what is the range of recommended tension for the Slap?
I use a Babolat Pure Aero 98 with RPM Blast at 55 lbs mains and 53 lbs crosses.
Looking forward to buying and trying your strings! Thanks!
ReString Response
Thank you so much for your interest and for reaching out to try our strings!
Coming from RPM Blast, I am confident that you will love Slap. While Slap will provide a bit more power, the primary advantage is the long-lasting spin provided by our Signature Snapback technology.
Regarding tension, I recommend trying 54 lbs in the mains and 52 lbs in the crosses. That setup should work great in your Babolat Aero 98 frame.
