How Often Should You Restring a Tennis Racket

The standard rule is to restring as many times per year as you play per week.

For example, if you play twice a week, restring twice a year.

This baseline gives you a starting point for maintaining your racket's performance. But it's not the complete picture.

However, a calendar can't tell you what your strings are doing. Your racket can, and it starts telling you to restring long before anything snaps.

When to Restring Your Tennis Strings

You should restring your racket when your strings stop performing, not when they break.

A break is the last sign in a sequence, not the first. If you hit hard you might break your strings, but most recreational and intermediate players never do.

Your strings will go dead in the racket instead.

Dead strings are strings that have lost their performance. The snapback is gone, the tension is gone, and the response you had on day one is gone. You're hitting with a dead brick.

The good news is that deadening arrives in four stages, so you can decide at what stage you want to restring, depending on whether you want more performance or value.

1. Snapback Goes First

The first sign you need to restring is your snapback starting to fade.

To test this, pull the mains sideways with your fingers and let go.

Fresh strings snap straight back to parallel. Dead strings stay where you put them.

This is the earliest cue in the sequence and the first point you can act on because when snapback goes, your spin goes with it.

This is where competitive and professional players restring. If you want your racket to feel fresh every time you pick it up, this is your signal.

2. Notching Appears

When the slick snapback goes, notching will start to appear.

To test if you have notching, pull a cross string aside and look at the intersections.

Grooves worn into the string mean your stringbed has started notching.

Those grooves lock the mains and crosses into each other, locked strings stop moving, and strings that stop moving stop snapping back.

Don't confuse notching with fraying. Fraying is purely cosmetic, whereas notching is what ends a polyester string's playing life.

3. Tension Drops Away

When you restring, your strings are set at a certain tension.

However, when you start playing, that tension starts to drop. Every ball you hit stretches your strings like an elastic band, and they never go back exactly to their original tension.

When the tension drops too much, the ball sits longer in your stringbed and leaves with less control. That's why shots start going long without any change in your technique.

As you start compensating with your swing to keep balls in, tension loss has taken the predictability out of the stringbed.

4. Stringbed Goes Dead

When your strings have gone fully dead, contact feels dull and muted instead of crisp.

A stringbed this far gone plays nothing like it did fresh, and your performance is impacted.

This is where the risk to your arm becomes real. Dead strings stop absorbing impact, so the shock passes straight through to your wrist and elbow.

If you've been stretching your strings for full value, this is where that stops paying off. It’s best not to wait for the string to break. It’s time to restring.

What Affects How Fast You Need to Restring

Your Playing Time

The more hours you play with a string, the faster you need to restring.

Beginners who hit the court once or twice monthly get roughly 12 months out of a set. Even sitting in your bag, strings lose tension over time, so age catches them before play does.

Recreational players hitting twice a week are usually looking at 6 months. Tournament players playing 3 or more sessions a week will feel the snapback fade inside a month.

Your Playing Style

Aggressive baseliners are typically the hardest on a stringbed.

Long topspin rallies mean the mains and crosses are grinding against each other on every shot, and that friction is what cuts the grooves to create notching.

Counter punchers can also wear strings at a similar rate. The rallies run just as long, and every ball absorbed and redirected is another pass of the mains across the crosses.

All-court players and big servers sit somewhere in between. Points end sooner so there are fewer contacts, though heavy spin serves still move the strings hard.

Serve-and-volley players get the most out of a set. Short points mean the fewest contacts, and volleys barely move the stringbed at all.

Your String Material

Natural Gut

Natural gut holds tension well but is very sensitive to the conditions.

Moisture and humidity break the natural string material down quickly, which means it needs replacing regularly regardless of how much you play.

It's the softest material available and the most expensive, and that combination of price and regular restringing is why it's mostly sponsored pros who play natural gut.

Multifilament

Multifilament tends to die of fraying. The outer fibers break down and the string eventually snaps, which at least gives you an obvious signal to work with.

It lasts longer than natural gut and gives you comfort without frequent restringing. The tradeoff is that multifilament strings won't give you the performance of polyester or gut.

Polyester

Polyester is the string type that almost all competitive players use for performance.

It is also the most durable string type due to the strong material structure, so unless you hit hard, it almost never breaks first. It just stops performing while it's still perfectly intact.

Polyester lifespan gets quoted anywhere between 10 and 20 hours of play. The spread is that wide because it measures playability rather than breakage.

The key to making polyester strings play better for longer is to choose one with long-lasting snapback and great tension maintenance, so the stringbed doesn't go dead too quickly.
